Rosin is a yellow, solid, transparent vegetable resin, the residue of the distillation of turpentine (resins of conifers Pinus palustris and other pines of the Pinaceae family). Cooked rosin is also used as refractive ground. Applied on the wood, before or after a protein separator, it makes the wood very luminous and also acts as an sealer. Rosin is mainly the basic resin of the Cremonese varnishes of the golden age cooked together with linseed oil. For the bows it is the resin which allows the ideal friction between the hair and the strings. This is why rosin is the most important resin for violin making.
