Ansaldo Poggi da Villa Fontana

The second volume in the series “Liuteria Emiliana del Novecento” is dedicated to Ansaldo Poggi. Over a career spanning more than sixty years - one devoted to a tireless pursuit of technical and aesthetic perfection - Poggi was able to attain heights beyond the reach of most of his contemporaries, thanks in part to the fundamental teachings of his mentor, Giuseppe Fiorini. This volume offers a return to the roots of the legendary reputation of the Bolognese luthier - a reputation he achieved during his lifetime already and due to the exceptional sonority of his instruments - through a previously unpublished examination of his correspondence, notes, and workshop methods.

• With contributions by Gian Carlo and Raffaella Guicciardi, Paolo Bandini, Rudolf Hopfner, and Andrea Zanrè;
• over 55 examples of Ansaldo Poggi’s work, illustrated alongside the work of his predecessors Raffaele and Giuseppe Fiorini and the few students who carried on this branch of the Bolognese tradition;
• a comprehensive study of Poggi’s correspondence, which sheds new light on the luthier’s relationships with his clients and his teacher Giuseppe Fiorini, thanks to a donation made in 2024 by Giovanni Accornero to the town of Medicina of a fundamental collection of previously unpublished documents;
• an investigation of Poggi’s working methods based on an analysis of his drawings, moulds, and workshop materials that were restored to their complete state after 2024;
