An amazing Smoother Plane to smooth even the most difficult woods with safety and precision. This Veritas state-of-the-art smoothing plane is the tool to use for the final finish on surfaces, especially woods of difficult grain patterns. Dubbed the 164 1/2H, it combines the generous width and weight (4 lb 14 oz) of a dedicated smoother with the versatile inner workings of a low-angle bevel-up plane. The coffin-shaped body, with a 10" × 3 1/8" sole, is made of fully stress-relieved ductile cast iron and has an exceptionally low center of gravity for smooth, stable cutting action. The adjustable mouth can be closed to a narrow slit for fine shavings with minimum tear-out or opened for heavier cuts. A stop-screw in the throat adjusts to whatever mouth opening you find ideal for chip breaking and chip clearance. This lets you open the mouth fully for blade removal (for honing) and replacement, yet quickly restores your exact mouth setting. The large hardwood front knob and rear handle provide both comfort and excellent control. The adjustment mechanism, with its combined feed and lateral adjustment knob, makes blade setting easy and accurate. Set screws prevent the blade from shifting, but allow full lateral adjustment. Accurately machined, the sole is flat and square to the sides.

  • A state-of-the-art, pure smoothing plane

  • Net weight 2.2kg
  • Blade width 57mm
  • Sole length 255mm

This exceptional plane combines the ideal width and weight to produce incredible finishing planes, also thanks to the low angle seating. The "coffin" body model, has a 255mm sole, the body made entirely of cast iron and has an exceptionally low center of gravity for a smooth and stable cutting action. Carefully worked, the sole is flat and square on the sides. The 12° bed angle, coupled with the 38° blade bevel, yields an effective cutting angle of 50°, often called York pitch. This is an ideal starting angle to minimize tear-out on difficult wood. For the most challenging woods, even higher cutting angles can be achieved (for the creation of type II chips), either by honing the blade with a top micro-bevel or using one of the optional blades. The adjustable mouth can be closed very tight for thin chips with minimal tear out or opened for heavy cuts. A stop screw in the throat adjusts to any mouth opening, and allows finding the ideal one for chip breakage and chip passage. This allows the mouth to be fully opened for blade removal for sharpening or replacement, but quickly restores the exact mouth setting. The hard wood front knob and the rear handle provide comfort and excellent control. The adjustment mechanism, with the related feed knob and side adjustment, makes blade adjustment easy and accurate. The fixing screws prevent the blade from changing position, but allow complete lateral adjustment. Supplied with a PMV-11® steel blade with a 38° angle and 5mm thickness.
