Turpentine is obtained by distilling gum from pine trees. It is then rectified, which makes it colourless and increases its fluidity .It is mainly used for thinning oil colours, therby making them easier to use for basic sketches by fluidifying them without altering their hue. Less volatile than Quick drying petroleum, it gives less of a matt appearence to the work.
