Carnauba wax is a highly prized vegetable wax.
It is hot soluble in common solvents (ethyl alcohol, essence of turpentine, aromatics, etc.) and is obtained from the leaves of the Brazilian palm Copernicia prunifera. It is the hardest natural wax known and has a very high melting point (80-87° C) so it is used to impart greater strength and shine to other waxes and to increase their melting point.
Traditionally it is a fundamental ingredient of the encaustic technique and in restoration it is used for the creation of mixtures for grouting, waxing or painting.
In lutherie, above all for guitars or for antiquing instruments, it is used for the finishing of the varnish with a final layer of protective wax to be applied with a warm cloth. The varnish acquires a particularly smooth, soft to the touch and elegant appearance.
