Stainless Steel Type 316
The finger planes are made of stainless steel that does not corrode and it is much harder and durable than brass. 316 grade is one of the most commonly used stainless steels, due to its increased resistance to corrosion. For both its strength and beauty, it has long been used for making fine watches.
Blades made of high-speed Steel (HSS), approx. HRC 60-62
These are superior to the older high-carbon steel tools as they can withstand higher temperatures without losing their temper (hardness). This property allows HSS to cut faster than high carbon steel, hence the name of high-speed steel. The material is hard and tough with high abrasion resistance, therefore it is often used for producing power-saw blades and drill bits as well as making fine hand tools suitable for low speed applications that require sharp edges.
