Kaolin, the name used to indicate the finest quality of natural clay. A mineral in great demand due to its whiteness, it derives from the chalking of a sedimentary rock essentially made up of pure kaolinite and aluminum silicate.
Unlike clay, kaolin is more floury and less greasy and is used in violin making as a preparation of pore sealers mixed with varnish or oil-based mediums.
